TP-Link VX230v Setup Guide

TP-Link VX230v Setup Guide

The VX230v is a Wi-Fi 6 VDSL/ADSL modem router — ideal for FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, HFC, and FTTP setups, depending on your nbn® technology.

Here's how to set it up step by step.

Whats In The Box

  • TP-Link VX230v unit (modem + router)
  • Power adapter (12V)
  • Ethernet cable
  • Quick setup / installation guide

If anything is missing or damaged, please reach out to support before proceeding.

Step 1: Placement and power up

  1. Place the VX230v on a flat, open surface (away from heavy interference).
  2. Insert the power adapter into the VX230v and plug it into a working wall outlet.
  3. Turn the unit on (if there's a power button).
  4. Wait approximately 30 seconds. You should see the Power LED light up (solid).
  5. Other LEDs (DSL, Internet, Wi-Fi) may flash initially before stabilising.

Step 2: Connect to your nbn® equipment

How you connect depends on your nbn® technology:

For FTTN or FTTB connections (phone line):

Plug the DSL (phone) cable from the wall socket into the DSL port on the VX230v — this is the grey port labelled "DSL".

For FTTC, FTTP, HFC, or Fixed Wireless connections (Ethernet):

Connect the cable from your nbn® connection box (labelled UNI-D, Gateway, or WAN) to the WAN port on the VX230v — this is the LAN4/WAN port on the modem.

Make sure the nbn® box is powered on and cables are firmly seated.

If you have a VoIP (telephone) service:

Connect your home phone to the Phone / VoIP port on the back of the VX230v.

Step 3: Connect a device to configure

You'll need to access the VX230v's settings via a computer, phone, or tablet:

  • Use an Ethernet cable: plug one end into one of the VX230v's LAN ports and the other into your device.
  • Or connect via Wi-Fi: look for the SSID printed on the sticker under the router (e.g. TP-Link_xxxx) and use the default Wi-Fi password from the same sticker.

Step 4: Log in to the VX230v

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to http://tplinkmodem.net or http://192.168.1.1
  2. On first use or after a factory reset, you'll be prompted to set an admin password.
  3. If already set up, enter the admin password.

Once logged in, you'll typically see a Quick Setup Wizard to guide you through service setup.

Step 5: Configure your internet connection

In the setup wizard (or under Internet / WAN settings) you'll configure:

  • DSL / EWAN: Choose based on your technology. For FTTN/FTTB, select VDSL / DSL mode. For FTTP, HFC, or FTTC, choose EWAN / Ethernet WAN mode.
  • Connection type: Usually Dynamic IP / DHCP (for most nbn® services).
  • VLAN ID: Only if your ISP requires one.
  • Username / password: Only for specific service types (rare in retail nbn®).

Run the Connection Test step to confirm everything is working.

Step 6: Configure wireless (Wi-Fi)

Once your internet connection is active:

  1. Go to the Wireless / Basic Settings section.
  2. Rename the SSID(s) (2.4GHz / 5GHz) to something you'll recognise.
  3. Choose a strong password (WPA2 or WPA3 if available).
  4. Save / Apply the settings.
  5. Reconnect your devices to the new Wi-Fi name if you've changed it.

Step 7: Final checks and mesh (optional)

  • Wait a few minutes — the Internet LED should turn solid or stable to indicate the connection is up.
  • Test browsing, streaming, etc.
  • If you use extra mesh units (e.g. HX220), you can add them under Network Map → Add Mesh Device in the VX230v interface.
