Online Safety Tips

Staying safe online is more important than ever. Follow these simple steps to help protect your personal information, devices, and loved ones while browsing, shopping, or working online.

1. Use strong, unique passwords

  • Create passwords that are at least 12 characters long and include a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Avoid reusing the same password across different accounts.
  • Consider using a password manager to securely store and generate complex passwords.

2. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

  • Turn on 2FA wherever possible, it adds an extra layer of protection.
  • Common methods include SMS codes, authenticator apps, or security keys.

3. Keep your devices up to date

  • Regularly update your phone, computer, and router.
  • Software updates often include important security patches that protect against new threats.

4. Protect your home Wi-Fi

  • Change your router's default Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password.
  • Use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. You can find this option in your router's settings.
  • Only share your Wi-Fi password with people you trust.

5. Be alert to scams

  • Don't click on suspicious links in emails, texts, or social media messages.
  • Be cautious of calls claiming to be from "nbn®," banks, or government agencies. Scammers often impersonate trusted organisations.
  • If you're unsure, hang up and call the organisation directly using their official number.

6. Protect children online

  • Set up parental controls available on most routers, devices, and streaming platforms.
  • Talk to your kids about safe online behaviour and what to avoid.
  • Encourage them to speak up if something online feels uncomfortable or unsafe.

7. Shop and bank safely

  • Look for the padlock icon in your browser before entering payment or login details.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi for online shopping, banking, or entering personal information.

8. Back up your important data

  • Regularly back up your photos, documents, and files.
  • Store backups securely using a cloud service or external hard drive.

9. Use antivirus and security tools

  • Install a reputable antivirus program on all your devices.
  • Keep it up to date and run regular scans to detect and remove potential threats.
