nbn® Fibre Upgrade Program

nbn® Fibre Upgrade Program

Some homes may be eligible for a free upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) through the nbn® Fibre Upgrade Program. This upgrade replaces older copper-based technologies with fibre optic infrastructure, giving eligible customers access to faster and more reliable internet.

What Is the Fibre Upgrade Program?

The nbn® fibre upgrade is a government-backed initiative as part of their commitment to improving the overall quality of internet across Australia. Over the coming years, millions of homes will become eligible for a free fibre upgrade from FTTN (Fibre to the Node) and FTTC (Fibre to the Curb) to FTTP (Fibre to the Premises).

This upgrade gives homes access to faster speeds, improved reliability, and the ability to take advantage of higher-speed nbn® plans.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility is determined by nbn®, not Ezi Broadband. A home may be eligible if:
  1. Your current connection is FTTN or FTTC
  2. You are in an area where nbn® is rolling out new fibre infrastructure
  3. nbn® has confirmed that your address meets all upgrade requirements
Not all homes in a suburb will be eligible at the same time. Ezi Broadband can check your eligibility when you enter your address on our plans page or fibre upgrade page.

What Are the Benefits of FTTP?

Upgrading to fibre provides:
  1. Faster Speeds: Access to higher speed tiers suitable for 4K streaming, gaming, large downloads, and multi-device homes.
  2. Better Reliability: Fibre is less affected by distance, weather, and electrical interference compared to copper-based technologies.
  3. Improved Upload Speeds: Ideal for working from home, cloud backups, video calling, and content creation.
  4. Future-Proof Technology: FTTP is the most capable and stable nbn® technology available, ready for the speeds of tomorrow.

How the Upgrade Works

  1. We transfer your existing connection to our network. To minimise downtime, we transfer your current connection to the Ezi Broadband network first while you wait for your fibre upgrade.
  2. Your nbn® appointment is scheduled. The first available nbn® appointment is booked for your fibre installation — usually within 7–14 days. You can reschedule at any time if needed.
  3. Appointment day — it's time to lay the fibre. An nbn® technician will visit your premises and install the fibre optic cable. Upgrades typically take 1–2 hours to complete.
  4. You're connected — up to 10x the speed is at your fingertips. After installation, you'll receive an email with modem setup instructions. Once your modem is connected, your new speed kicks in straight away.

Does It Cost Anything?

The fibre upgrade is free for eligible homes. Additional charges may apply only if:
  1. You request non-standard installation work
  2. You need additional cabling inside the home
  3. You require relocation of existing equipment
Standard FTTP installations are free.

How Do I Check If My Home Is Eligible?

You can check your fibre upgrade eligibility by:
  1. Visiting our fibre upgrade page at ezibroadband.com.au/fibre-upgrade and entering your address
  2. Using the address checker on our plans page
  3. Speaking with the Ezi Broadband support team
If your home is eligible, we'll guide you through the upgrade process.

What Equipment Will I Need?

After the upgrade, you'll connect your modem to the new FTTP connection box using an Ethernet cable. Compatible modems include:
  1. TP-Link HB210 Pro (Wi-Fi 7 mesh)
  2. TP-Link HX510 (Wi-Fi 6)
  3. TP-Link VX230v
  4. Any compatible Wi-Fi router with a WAN Ethernet port
See Which Modem Can I Use? for full compatibility details.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I have to upgrade? No — the upgrade is completely optional. You can stay on your current connection if you prefer.
  2. Will my service be interrupted? There may be a short outage on installation day while the new equipment is activated.
  3. Is a technician required? Yes. The upgrade involves running new fibre and installing new nbn® hardware at your premises.
  4. Can every FTTN or FTTC home get fibre? No. Eligibility depends on nbn® infrastructure rollout in your area.
  5. How long does the upgrade take? The installation itself typically takes 1–2 hours. The full process from order to installation is usually 7–14 days, depending on technician availability.
