Switching from mobile broadband to the nbn® is a great way to enjoy faster speeds, more reliable performance, and unlimited data — especially for streaming, working from home, or gaming.
While both services provide internet access, the way they connect (and what you'll need) is quite different.
Understanding the difference
Mobile broadband connects through Australia's 4G or 5G mobile network — similar to how your phone accesses the internet. It's portable and convenient but can be affected by signal strength, congestion, and data limits.
nbn® broadband, on the other hand, uses a fixed-line or fixed-wireless network that connects directly to your home. It's designed for higher capacity and more consistent performance, even during peak times.
In short, the nbn® delivers a home-based connection that's faster, more stable, and usually comes with unlimited data.
What changes when you move to the nbn®
- You'll connect through fixed infrastructure — Instead of relying on mobile towers, nbn® uses physical infrastructure such as fibre optic cables, copper lines, or wireless towers connected directly to your address.
- You'll need an nbn®-ready modem or router — Mobile broadband modems (with SIM cards) aren't compatible with nbn® connections. If you're signing up with Ezi Broadband, we'll provide a pre-configured nbn® modem suited to your connection type — or you can use your own if it meets compatibility requirements.
- You'll have a permanent installation point — Most nbn® services include a wall socket or nbn® connection box (NTD) inside your home. This replaces the portable hotspot or USB dongle you may have used with mobile broadband.
- Data limits and speeds — nbn® plans typically offer unlimited data. Speed tiers range from 25 Mbps to over 1000 Mbps, depending on your nbn® technology. Mobile broadband speeds vary with signal quality and network congestion.
- Better reliability and coverage — Once installed, nbn® performance doesn't depend on your mobile signal. It's ideal for streaming, large file uploads, video calls, and multiple users online at once.
What to do before switching
- Check your address using our Service Qualification tool to confirm what nbn® technology is available.
- Cancel your mobile broadband plan once your nbn® service is active to avoid overlap.
- Set up your new modem using the quick-start guide provided by Ezi Broadband.
- Update your connected devices to use your new Wi-Fi network name and password.
Tip: If you rely on mobile broadband for backup, you can still keep your 4G/5G modem as a secondary connection for emergencies or travel.
What stays the same
You'll still have:
- Wi-Fi throughout your home
- Access to streaming services and online platforms
- The flexibility to move your Ezi Broadband service when you change address
