The lights on your modem and nbn® connection box tell you what's happening with your internet connection. Knowing what each light means can help you quickly identify if your service is working properly — or where the issue might be.
While different modem brands have slightly different light labels, most follow the same general patterns.
Power light: A solid light means your modem is on and receiving power. If this light is off, your modem is not powered — make sure the power cable is plugged in securely and the outlet is switched on.
Internet / WAN light: A solid light means you're connected to the internet. If it's flashing, your modem is connecting or transmitting data. If this light is off, no connection has been detected — check your nbn® box is connected and powered on, then restart both your modem and nbn® device.
DSL / Line light: A solid light means the line is active and stable. Flashing indicates the modem is attempting to sync. If this light is off, there's no signal on the line — make sure your phone cable is plugged in securely and try a different wall socket or cable.
Wi-Fi / WLAN light: A solid light means Wi-Fi is on. Flashing indicates devices are connected and using data. If this light is off, Wi-Fi is disabled — turn it back on via your modem's settings or press the Wi-Fi button (if available).
LAN / Ethernet light: A solid light means a device is connected via cable. Flashing indicates active data transfer. If this light is off, no device is connected — check your Ethernet cables are firmly plugged in and not damaged.
WPS light: A flashing light means WPS pairing is in progress. A solid light means a device has connected via WPS. If this light is off, WPS is not active. If the light flashes for more than 2 minutes, restart the modem and reconnect your device manually.
USB light: A solid or flashing light means a USB device has been detected and is active. If this light is off, no USB device is connected. Safe to ignore unless you're using a USB device with your modem.
If you have an nbn® connection box (FTTP, FTTC, or HFC), it also has its own status lights.
If any of these lights stay off or red for more than five minutes after power-up, it usually means the connection hasn't been established yet.
