How To Identify Your nbn® Connection Type
Every address in Australia connects to the nbn® a little differently.
Knowing your nbn® connection type helps you understand your plan options, expected speeds, and the equipment you'll need to get connected with Ezi Broadband.
Why your connection type matters
Your nbn® technology type determines how the network delivers internet to your home or business. Some connection types (like Fibre to the Premises) can support ultra-fast speeds up to 2000 Mbps, while others (like Fibre to the Node) have lower limits due to copper wiring.
Understanding your connection type helps you:
- Choose the right Ezi Broadband plan
- Select the correct modem or router
- Know what to expect on installation day
- Identify whether you're eligible for a fibre upgrade
How to check your nbn® connection type
Use the Ezi Broadband Service Qualification Tool:
- Visit ezibroadband.com.au/SQ.
- Enter your full address in the search bar.
- Our system will check the nbn® database and display your connection type and available plans instantly.
How the technologies differ
- FTTP (Fibre to the Premises): Fibre runs directly to your home for the fastest speeds and lowest latency.
- HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial): Uses the same coaxial network as pay TV, capable of gigabit speeds in many areas.
- FTTC (Fibre to the Curb): Fibre to the pit outside your home, then a short copper run — fast and stable.
- FTTN (Fibre to the Node): Fibre to a nearby cabinet, with copper cabling to your premises — moderate speeds.
- FTTB (Fibre to the Building): Similar to FTTN but used for apartment complexes.
- Fixed Wireless: Uses radio signals from a nearby nbn® tower — great for rural and regional areas.
- Satellite: Connects via satellite for remote areas beyond terrestrial coverage.
How upgrades work
If you have an FTTN or FTTC connection, you may be eligible for a Fibre Connect upgrade. This allows fibre to be extended directly to your premises, unlocking faster speed tiers (up to 1000 Mbps and beyond). Check your eligibility using our Service Qualification tool.
