How to Change Your Wi-Fi Name And Password

How to Change Your Wi-Fi Name And Password

Changing your Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password is a quick and easy way to personalise your network — and keep it secure.

You can update these settings at any time through your modem's web interface.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • A device connected to your modem (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  • Your modem's IP address, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  • Your modem's admin username and password (printed on the sticker underneath the modem).

Step 1: Log in to your modem

  1. Open a web browser on your connected device.
  2. In the address bar, type your modem's IP address (for example, 192.168.1.1) and press Enter.
  3. Enter your admin username and password when prompted. If you haven't changed them before, use the default details printed on your modem label.

You'll now be logged into your modem's settings dashboard.

Step 2: Find your Wi-Fi settings

Once logged in, look for a section named one of the following:

  • Wireless, Wi-Fi, or Network
  • SSID Settings or Wireless Setup

If your modem has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, you can change them separately — or give them the same name for seamless roaming.

Step 3: Change your Wi-Fi name and password

  1. Locate the Wi-Fi name (SSID) field and enter your new name. You can make it anything you like (e.g. SmithFamilyWiFi or HomeOfficeNet).
  2. Locate the Wi-Fi password field and enter a new, secure password. Use at least 8 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
  3. Click Save or Apply to confirm your changes.

Your modem will briefly restart the Wi-Fi connection — this is normal.

Step 4: Reconnect your devices

After the change, all your devices will disconnect from Wi-Fi because the name or password has changed. Reconnect each device manually using your new Wi-Fi details.

Tips for a secure Wi-Fi network

  • Avoid using personal info (like names or addresses) in your Wi-Fi name.
  • Choose a strong password that's easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess.
  • Update your password every few months or if you think someone else might have access.

If you can't log in to your modem

If you've lost your modem login details or can't access the interface:

  • Check the label underneath your modem for the default credentials.
  • Try resetting your modem to factory settings (see "How to reset your modem").
